Yucca cernua (Agavaceae)
(YUK-ah SER-new-a)
Nodding Yucca
A recently discovered Yucca species, perhaps a natural hybrid, Yucca cernua is endemic to several counties in East Texas. Found in open, xeric uplands of the East Texas pine forests, this rare Yucca is trunkless with an unusually tall bloom stalk, up to 7', with white blooms in early summer. Leaves are 18" long, pale blue-green, soft with smooth edges and a sharp point. Hardiness is unknown as it is found only in zone 8, but similar yucca species are hardy to at least zone 5. Thanks once again to Peter Loos who collected the seed. Native.
