Patrinia scabiosifolia (Valerianaceae)
Patrinia, Yellow Valerian
This sturdy, show-stopping cousin of true Valerian does great in the heat and humidity of the South, providing see-through drifts of electric lemon-yellow from midsummer into fall. Blooms last and last, attracting a dizzying array of pollinators. Basal foliage stays lush and dense beneath airy, attractive stems which are dusted with yellow and turn reddish in fall. One of the 'seven flowers of autumn' celebrated in Japanese poetry and art, and for good reason!
